Things to Do in Dundee this Autumn


Planning a day out in Dundee? Want to entertain the kids for a day? Or just fancy a change of pace for yourself? As one of Scotland’s biggest cities, you would be surprised at just how much Dundee has packed into its historic walls. From ancient castles to contemporary art, beautiful scenery to fantastic shopping, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

So don’t let the blustery weather put you off this season – here’s what you could be doing!

See the world through new eyes

There’s nothing quite like seeing the world through the eyes of children to re-ignite your energy and creativity, and Dundee has some fantastic and exciting attractions that both kids and adults will love.

Fancy getting a bit hands on? Take a trip to Dundee Science Centre, where you can do everything from get involved in a dinosaur dig, or learn fascinating facts about space and colour.

If you’re feeling a bit more energetic – then the sky’s the limit! Quite literally, as you climb up a towering indoor vertical course, at Avertical World. While it might sound a little daunting at first – it’s definitely a challenging experience everyone will enjoy!

Take a trip back in time

Did you know that Dundee dates back all the way to the Iron Age, with the earliest inhabitants being the Picts?

With such an ancient history, Dundee has a wealth of historic attractions – that are guaranteed to inspire you and leave you gazing in awe. Head to Pictavia, where you can find out about the intriguing history of the Picts, or explore the picturesque ruins of Arbroath Abbey.

Being right on the river, Dundee’s shipyards are also an important part of its character and past, and there’s possibly no better place to get a taste of the seafaring history that shapes the city than a trip to RRS Discovery (pictured above) – the ship used for the historic expedition to the Antarctic in 1901. You can get up close and personal with history here, as you explore the ship itself, learn about the sophisticated equipment used to navigate treacherous waters, and even find out what life was like below deck!

Enjoy a breath of fresh air

With beautiful glens and magical forests just outside the city’s borders, you can easily escape to the countryside for a day from Dundee – and enjoy a truly relaxing day out.

For some magnificent views, head on a scenic countryside walk following the River Tay across the many hills. Discover the impressive waterfalls at Reekie Linn, or the diverse range of flora and fauna across the National Nature Reserve of Corrie Fee.

In search of some adrenaline? Don’t miss the Ancrum Outdoor Centre – where you can try your hand at everything from mountain biking and mountaineering, to cross-country skiing and snowboarding! And if it’s your first time – there are plenty of instructors to give you a helping hand.

Hit the shops!

Need a spot of retail therapy? Don’t worry – the city has you sorted. With some fantastic retail centres, including Wellgate and Overgate Centres, which are both packed with dozens of fantastic shops. Pick up anything from a new outfit for a night out, some great new homeware, or gifts and treats for friends and family.

You’ll also find lots of great spots to enjoy a snack or lunch if you’re feeling peckish! With everything from classic burgers and fries, and delicious Asian cuisine, to super-healthy juices and smoothies, there’s certainly something for every taste!
